At St Lawrence, our aim is to raise achievement throughout the whole curriculum supported by high quality physical education and sports. To achieve this, St Lawrence plan to attend a number of different sporting events, providing students with the opportunity to compete in a number of activities around the district. Teaching timetables and budget restraints mean that we are not always able to release staff to accompany small groups of children to events in school time but we have many willing parent volunteers who provide support by helping to manage and coordinate sports events, supervise small groups of children during the events and celebrating and recognising the children’s participation and achievements. Alongside this, we also have a few parents coming forward to help setup sporting clubs of their own.
A very big "Thank you!" to all of our volunteers whose contribution ensures that St Lawrence can continue to involve as many students as possible in the sports experience. If you would like to be involved in this and help to in
PE and Sport Grant Funding
The government has committed to provide additional funding to improve the provision of PE and sport in primary schools. This funding is ring-fenced and can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools. Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport they offer. As a result of the PE and Sport Grant Funding, 100% of our pupils now receive more than 2 hours of PE and Sport teaching each week. We use the funding to bring sport and PE specialist providers into school throughout the year. This gives the children the opportunity to try a range of different sport and exercise activities including badminton, golf, fitness classes, dodgeball, athletics, ball skills and crazyball.

All children in Years 4 & 5 take part in swimming lessons at our local pool. One class from each year group has 10 half-hour tuition sessions in each school term. By the time the children reach Year 6, we aim to make sure that as many as possible can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a minimum distance of 25m; can use a range of swimming strokes efficiently and are able to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations. Once again, we would like to thank the volunteers who help to escort the children to and from the pool each week as, without them, our pupils would miss out on the chance to attain this valuable life skill.
Competitive sports teams
St Lawrence has a boys' football team, a girls' football team, netball teams and a cross-country running squad who all take part in inter-school competitions within the local area.
Our whole school sports day is held each summer.
Students compete in their houses, wearing their house colours
all day and their aim is to to win the House cup. Activities are
tailored to the age group of the children concerned and
include track and field events, team games and fun events
such as plank-walking and tug-o'-war. Teachers and support
staff also have House affiliations and take part in some events
of their own!
This is an all day event that we encourage parents and carers
to enjoy with us, sharing picnic lunches with their children and
enjoying refreshments supplied by the PTA.
We also make provision for a range of sports clubs to run outside of the school's activities by allowing for external agencies to bring their afterschool clubs into St Lawrence and by entering into the Surrey District Sports events
